Pearls of Wisdom For Creating a Joyful Life: Happiness

There is only one person who could ever make you happy,
and that person is you.
~ David Burns, Intimate Connections

If you don't know where you are going,
you'll end up someplace else.
~ Yogi Berra

Create Your Own Happiness

You, alone, create your own happiness. No one else can “make you happy”—not a parent, a friend, a boyfriend or husband.

Achieving this state of contentment depends entirely on how you perceive your life’s situation and the choices you make during your lifetime.

If you adjust your attitude so that you are truly grateful for all that you have instead of bemoaning the fact that you have so little, you will be a happier person. No matter what your level of wealth, physical attributes or mental capacity, make the most of what you’ve got.

Happiness doesn’t just happen. It takes some thought and planning. Choose the type of career, lifestyle and relationships that you want—don’t let them choose you. You always have a choice, and the final decision is yours, so pick the ones that will give you the most joy.

Listen to your heart and follow your bliss!

Pearls of Wisdom For Creating a Joyful Life: Forgiveness

To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner was you.
~ Lewis B. Smedes

Learn to Forgive

Forgiving someone who hurt you doesn’t mean that you’re absolving them of their wrong-doing.

Forgiveness isn’t about the other person at all; it’s a gift that you give to yourself. It allows you to let go of your feelings of pain and anger to make room in your heart for love and joy.

Don’t hold on to negative feelings that can keep you trapped under a cloud of misery for the rest of your life. You’ll be harming yourself more than the person who hurt you.

Set yourself free from those negative feelings, and move on to a better and more joyful future!

Pearls of Wisdom For Creating a Joyful Life: Friendship

Friendship is a sheltering tree.
~ Samuel Taylor Coleridge

The only way to have a friend is to be one.
~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Cultivate Close Friendships

Having a strong support group of close friends is an invaluable resource.

Whether related or not, these women will be your sisters who share your most intimate thoughts and feelings and all of life’s ups and downs.

You will laugh together and cry together, and, most importantly, you will always be there for each other in times of need.

It’s important to cultivate these relationships. They aren’t always easy to find and take time and care to foster, but knowing you have this “safety net” will make your life infinitely more enjoyable.

Cherish your friends. They will add joy to your life!

Pearls of Wisdom For Creating a Joyful Life: Self-Respect

The way you treat yourself sets the standard for others.
~ Sonya Friedman

If you put a small value upon yourself, rest assured that the world will not raise your price.
~ Author Unknown

Show Others How to Treat You

Give yourself the same respect that you offer to others. Accept yourself as you are with whatever faults you may have and be proud of your accomplishments, strengths and special talents.

You deserve to be treated with kindness, dignity and respect. Do not endure emotional, mental or physical abuse in any form from anyone. Tolerating such behavior sends the message that it is acceptable. It is not! If you ever find yourself in such a relationship, get help and get out!

Your words and actions show others how to treat you. Send a message that is loud and clear: you have a very high regard for your own worth and expect to be treated accordingly.

Show respect toward those who have earned it and accept no less in return!

Pearls of Wisdom For Creating a Joyful Life: Accountability

The future lies before you, like paths of pure white snow. Be careful how you tread it, for every step will show.
~ Author Unknown

Your future depends on many things, but mostly on you.
~ Frank Tyger

Rule #1: Use your good judgment in all situations. There will be no additional rules.
~ Nordstrom's Employee Handbook

Take Responsibility

All your actions have consequences, so make sure to think before you act. Don’t de-rail your plans for a joyful life with irresponsible, impulsive behavior, like using illegal drugs, cheating on an exam, causing an accident while driving drunk, or creating an unplanned pregnancy.

Always think before you act! No matter how fun the activity might seem or how much pressure your peers might exert, ask yourself this question: “Is it worth sacrificing my entire future for?”

You will need to make many choices during your lifetime—some minor, others life-changing. Treat them all with careful consideration. Don’t allow others to steer you off course and don’t blame them when you take the wrong direction. The final decision is always yours.

Your intuition will guide you, so pay attention to your feelings and you will know when a choice is right or wrong.

Every decision you make will affect the rest of your life. Choosing the options that keep you on the right path will bring you joy!

Pearls of Wisdom For Creating a Joyful Life: Anger

For every minute you are angry you lose
sixty seconds of happiness.
~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

At the core of all anger is a need that is not being fulfilled.
~ Marshall B. Rosenberg

Let Go of Anger

Anger is generally the result of frustration. It’s a heavy burden to bear and not only blocks your joy but creates stress that can actually cause physical damage to your body.

Life is too short to waste even one minute on anger, so it’s up to you to find out what’s causing your frustration and take steps to remove it from your life.

In the words of Colin Powell, “Get mad and get over it.” Sometimes getting angry can motivate us into making a long-overdue change in our lives, but then we need to let it go and move on to a more joyful place.

Don’t live your life as an angry person. To find serenity, follow the advice offered in the well-known “Serenity Prayer” to change the things you can and adjust your attitude to accept the things you can’t.

You must let go of the anger to make room for joy!
